Almost perfect if not for the nitty-gritty. If it’s quite there but not enough to push the boundaries, it’s still an awesome game.

A surprisingly polished and accessible entry, Super Robot Wars Y skillfully blends multiple anime universes into a cohesive tactical RPG with stunning attack animations and deep customization.

Before anything else, it feels like a miracle to simply download and play a new Super Robot Wars on my PlayStation 5. No importing, no additional accounts, no region-locked DLC. It’s a wonderful thing.

V-V-V-Victorrrrrrry! Super Robot Wars Y is the latest entry in the long running Super Robot Wars franchise. While the game has a lot for new players to learn, it's an addictive experience all around.

Super Robot Wars Y is another solid entry into the series that brings several exciting new properties that fans of the series will appreciate.

What I’m saying is, playing this game is definitely not a substitute for watching or reading the titles featured. If you don’t know who these characters are, you’ll get very confused, very fast. However, this game is a very good argument for why you should should get caught up on fifty years of giant robot shows.

Super Robot Wars Y succeeds as fan service for those who want to see their favorite mech or pilot fight side-by-side, but fails to deliver a rewarding narrative to go along with it. Add on some subpar production value, and you end up with a game that is unremarkable in most areas but also inoffensive. Only the most hardcore of the Super Robot Wars series will get the most fun out of Super Robot Wars Y.

Super Robot Wars Y is a celebration of the history of giant robots, bringing countless mecha and pilots together across time to fight back against a galactic force of enemies in tactical RPG grid-based combat. The battle animations are bombastic and eye-catching, but is the gameplay enough to make you not just look up cutscenes and let that be it?
