The Outer Worlds: Murder on Eridanos Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
The Outer Worlds: Murder on Eridanos is a marvelous farewell to the memorable cast and locales that this game has delivered to players. If you have enjoyed the quirky adventures of the Unreliable’s “heroic” crew, you owe it to yourself to experience this last hurrah in Halcyon.
Why, for example, does the pool look like the Incredible Hulk has relieved himself in it? What’s the mysterious prize at the heart of the hedge maze, and why are people literally dying to get it? Was that guard was really still alive when their “friend” left them? As Inspector, you’ll be asked to investigate more than just Halcyon Helen’s death and it folds in the kind of fuzzy morality that was so welcome in Fallout: New Vegas. There are of course a handful of new monsters and weapons too, but they’re just the icing on the cake.
The Outer Worlds: Murder on Eridanos is the game at its absolute best. It's a great murder mystery and a perfect excuse to jump back in.
Like its first piece of DLC, The Outer Worlds proved that a bit of ingenuity can go a long way when coupled with quality and a level of polish that exceeds the genre’s admittedly weak standards. The game didn’t do a whole lot of new things but it did them all so well. Murder on Eridanos, the game’s second and final piece of DLC, doesn’t sway from that pattern and caps off the incredible RPG with a killer expansion to die for.
Say farewell to The Outer Worlds with its final DLC, offering an adventure full of witty dialogue and the best location the game has to offer.
Overall, Murder on Eridanos is a solid addition to The Outer Worlds. Players are in charge of solving a murder and piecing together clues, making it an interesting and fun time. The real issue at this point is the well-documented technical difficulties that have plagued players since the DLC’s release. Hopefully, a patch will be released to fix them soon, along with the other errors that have been pointed out.
The final expansion to Obsidian’s original sci-fi RPG is a low-key but intriguing finale. The Outer Worlds: Murder on Eridanos puts us into a traditionally structured murder mystery with a few good turns to investigate across one of its weirdest planets yet. It doesn’t revive the stale combat but it does give us a good reason to come back to the crew of the Unreliable to solve one last case.
Murder on Eridanos, the second DLC planned as part of The Outer Worlds' Season Pass, is out today. Following the previous release of Peril on Gorgon, there has been no indication there will be any more downloadable content for The Outer Worlds, making this possibly the last DLC before the developer turns to other projects (likely including a sequel, given that the game turned out to be more successful than even publisher Private Division had anticipated; rumors about The Outer Worlds 2 being in pre-production are already swirling, in fact).
When The Outer Worlds’ first DLC dropped – Peril on Gorgon – we were treated to an exciting and intriguing glimpse into the kind of shock and horror the people of Halcyon love to listen to on the serial radio shows. Your beloved crewmates referenced it throughout the adventure, as a scary and shocking narrative with all manner of twists and turns leading to dark revelations about the corporations who run things from the shadows. When the game’s follow up DLC was announced, I couldn’t wait to see what the next adventure for the plucky crew of The Unreliable would be and it turned out to be… mor...
The Outer Worlds' Murder on Eridanos DLC is the epitome of a mixed bag. For all of its high points, there are flaws and missteps which keep it from reaching the heights it otherwise could have.
While Murder on Eridanos has fun moments focusing on investigating and dialogue choices, it is actively undermined by shoving combat in your face and a twist that makes events leading up to that point feel pointless.
Murder on Eridanos, the final DLC for space RPG The Outer Worlds, will release on 17th March, but we were able to review it in advance.
