The Ramp is a simplistic skateboarding game with no goals or challenges to meet, all you do is have fun skating on the four courses and performing cool tricks. The game doesn’t have a huge time requirement, you just have fun skating around.

This review is being written right after the conclusion of the Tokyo Summer Olympics. In my opinion, the coolest sport to watch during the event was skateboarding, without a doubt. Every time I’d watch a street or park competition, I would suddenly feel the urge to play a skateboarding game, be it Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater or playing an older Skate game on my Xbox. The Ramp, a one-man project recently released on Steam, comes right at the best moment, but with a catch.

The Ramp is a minimal skateboarding experience that acts as more of a tool than a video game. At face value, it is an enjoyable experience that’s perfect for a quick skate, but those looking for a bit more depth might be better off looking elsewhere.

I’m not going to blast The Ramp too much for how limited it is in its offerings because the developer is pretty straightforward about exactly that. It’s essentially a chill experience without goals or milestones to achieve. You skate to your heart’s content, enjoy the soundtrack, land tricks, crash and burn, and restart to your heart’s content. I enjoyed it for what it is. It’s not something I can imagine anyone putting hours of playtime into. Still, at the very least, if you want to kill some time, stick some tricks, and occasionally absolutely annihilate your poor little skater on some bad landings, The Ramp could be worth a spin at its low price of $6.

That was just a glimpse at what is in store with Sable before it comes out later this year. It remains to be seen if this fantastic vertical slice can be sustained through the rest of the game, however long it may be in the end. But already I feel myself woven into this world after only a short time, and I don’t know about you but I cannot wait to get lost in its plains, letting my eyes guide me on my bike-bound adventure.  Unfortunately, the time has passed for you to play the demo if you haven’t yet already, but soon we shall all be able to fully embark upon our travels and unfold the secrets of this sand-covered land.
