The original world of Touhou was created by ZUN, a one-man dev team who has handled the game design, scenario writing, programming, character design, and music production for over 15 entries into the universe. Though he originally created Touhou back in 1996 as a way to create his own game music, the series has become a bit of a phenomenon thanks t...

Touhou Genso Wanderer Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
NIS America has been steadily growing its roster of Touhou spinoff titles, each bringing the bullet hell titles into new and varying genres. Their latest release, Touhou Genso Wanderer transforms into a roguelike RPG and even includes a second title, Double Focus, for those that pick up the first batch of copies. Arriving on both the PlayStation 4 and Vita systems, we opted for the Vita release, with previous roguelike RPG’s being a perfect fit to take on the go.
Touhou Genso Wanderer is the first Touhou rogue-like to come to the west, as well as a rare chance for PS4 owners to experience a traditional Japanese rogue-like. With fun characters, charming graphics, and a MASSIVE quantity of randomly crafted loot, Genso Wanderer will steal your life. Grab your controller, silence your phone, and put on your anime-watchin' Snuggy for this rocking randomized experience!
Touhou is a game that thrives on difficult but fun gameplay, but may be to much for those not interested in the series.
No genre in gaming is as love-hate as the roguelike. One second, you're kicking butt and the next, you're dead. Touhou Genso Wanderer is a love letter to the classic Mystery Dungeon series so let's see if these shrine maidens were built to survive.
Ultimately, Genso Wanderer is a unique and intimidating game. Its low-budget nature can make it feel impenetrable to most Touhou community outsiders. The unfortunate truth for most projects within the Touhou world is that if you’re not already interested in them, you probably will never be. Nevertheless, for a niche fandom such as this, almost every project of this calibre feels like a gift. It may lack Touhou’s epic music or its frantic bullet-hell difficulty, but it brings out what’s always been enticing about these games and, more specifically, its community’s ability to create. Existing si...
I suspect I will always have time for a good, classical roguelike. They’re becoming less frequent, and therefore I think we need stuff like Genso Wanderer to keep the tradition alive. It’s not perfect, and it will frustrate many, but it’s a quality, solid effort nonetheless.
Rogue-like role-playing release Touhou Genso Wanderer follows the story of adorable protagonist Reimu Harukei. Reimu becomes entranced by the 'golden sphere' that soon-to-be antagonist Rinnosuke Morichika is holding, and tries to steal it from him. Clearly under the sphere's spell, Rinnosuke fights back, and Reimu soon finds herself away from her home, trying to find her way back and battling the clones which have been borne of the sphere's dark power. The whole thing feels a little trope-y, and starting the game feels like setting off down a well-worn path, so it's a good job that it has a lo...
When Touhou Genso Wanderer was handed to me to review I’ll admit I had to do a bit of homework to see what I kind of game I was in for. It turned out that Genso Wanderer was a mystery dungeon explorer – talk about a dying genre! Having only played Pokémon Mystery Dungeon as reference to this niche gameplay style, this was going to be an experience for me. Good or bad, I was certainly up to the challenge.
