Weeping Doll Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

And that’s good for me on one level; I certainly didn’t come away from this game with any lost affection for dolls, and my Miku continues to own the living room. More seriously, though, Weeping Doll had a lot of potential, and it’s genuinely disappointing that it wasn’t able to follow through with it. This one you can’t chalk up as developer teething pains with VR; this game would be every bit as flawed, regardless of the platform it was on.

Weeping Doll is a brief preview of what horror is capable of, if given time. However, it does not stand on its own as anything noteworthy. While motion sickness won’t be a concern, keeping your interest will be. The confusing set pieces, empty story, and rough dialogue will distract you from enjoying the experience. Unfortunately, Weeping Doll does better at scaring you away than it does at pulling you in. Some might find it a bit unsettling and atmospheric, but that won’t make it any better to play, necessarily. It seems we’ll still have to wait for the exceptional horror VR title… maybe that...

With the promise of far better PSVR horror titles on the horizon, not to mention the superior Here They Lie being available right now, the only thing that will be weeping will be you if you buy this subpar, scare-free effort.

Weeping Doll is a horror game that isn't scary and features a nonsensical story, boring puzzles, and terrible voice acting.

As a dark comedy, Weeping Doll would be just about the most amusing game on PlayStation VR right now – and that's high praise considering that the platform already plays host to the genuinely hilarious Job Simulator and Headmaster. But somehow we don't think that Chinese outfit TianShe Media had funnies in mind when it made this virtual reality "fright" fest.

The sad thing about Weeping Doll is that the concept could have generated some excellen VR games. Taking tales from across Asia and adapting them in to spooky VR experiences, a virtual reality version of Ringu, for example, would be brilliant. However, the execution for Weeping Doll is poor, from the laughable dialogue to the puzzles which can be solved in a matter of seconds. When rated next to the brilliant Here They Lie for PlayStation VR, Weeping Doll just doesn’t come up to scratch.
