Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
This is now the best way to experience Neverwinter Nights 2 in its entirety—whether you’re new to the game or returning after breaking your old copy with countless incompatible mods and error-strewn patches. Gamepad support and enhanced visuals and audio bring it much closer to modern expectations, while the lived-in world and even greater range of character options offer plenty to explore. The expansions, included here with the same level of polish, significantly enhance the package. Yes, there are archaic frustrations that cannot be ignored, but they have a less significant impact on the…
Neverwinter Nights 2 is an artifact of its time, and today straddles a somewhat uncomfortable spot where it’s not quite so nostalgic that it feels “retro” while at the same time, the games industry is now producing far more complex and nuanced narratives, in particular. With that being said, as a stand-in for getting a group together to play some tabletop Dungeons & Dragons, it’s difficult to look past this. Basically, it’s the right kind of kitsch.
The Enhanced Edition isn’t a major overhaul, some original issues like the clunky UI and awkward camera still persist. In return, you get improved visuals and high-resolution textures. But even with its flaws, Neverwinter Nights 2 and its Mask of the Betrayer expansion continue to offer exceptional storytelling that holds up remarkably well. Play it for the nostalgia.
Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition is a minimal preservation effort. At least it's not abandonware anymore. Higher resolutions and controller support make it playable on modern PCs and now consoles, but old bugs and dated assets remain. It’s still a richly layered D&D adventure — with all the charm of its 2006 origins.
There's a strange feeling of, "wait, was it like that before?" with Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition. Accept that this is an earlier game and take it on its own terms, and you'll at least come away with a better understanding of how the genre evolved.
Ultimately, if you can forgive the crusty aesthetics (and I would encourage you to do so - even if there is a lot of forgiveness to be dished out), Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition will still absolutely decimate your social calendar as it thoroughly draws you into its Dungeons & Dragons setting. It's just a shame that some more care and attention wasn't lavished to give this re-release the proper love it deserves.
Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition doesn't roll very high on effort for its "enhancements," but it does bring a classic adventure back for those with the taste to pursue it.
Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition arrives for consoles. While the campaign is overall enjoyable, the the scarce significant new features and the constant bugs make this endeavour even tougher than it should be.
Neverwinter Nights 2 had a mixed reception. Some people believe that Bioware will always be king when it comes to the Dungeons & Dragons licensing of CRPG games, and others believe that Obsidian takes what Bioware does and makes it better. These are arguments of the past, however, as Bioware lost the Dungeons and Dragons license midway through the aughts and has since had breakaway hits and failures with their own IPs. So we leave it up to companies like Aspyr to take these great games and ma...
Aspyr breaths new life into Neverwinter Nights 2 with the release of their Enhanced Edition, bringing the CRPG classic to consoles for the first time and reviving its multiplayer, with the rest of the game feeling like a missed opportunity.
Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter Nights 2 is heralded as one of the best Character RPGs of all time. Well, not the base game, the “Mask of the Betrayer” DLC
