Nintendo's party loses a little luster in its attempt to widen its scope.
Later entries in the Rambo movie series devolve into typical action movie fare, filled with scenes of Sylvester Stallone unloading machine guns into untold numbers of enemy combatants. Despite this, the original movie carries a clear theme of non-violence. He doesn’t want to hurt the policemen in the town of Hope, Washington, but he’s forced to rely on his military knowledge when they hunt him through the woods. At the end of First Blood, the body count stands at one (an accidental death after Rambo throws a rock at a helicopter). During the First Blood stages of Rambo: The Video Game, I killed almost 100 policemen. Inconsistencies with the film’s tone are the least of this game’s problems, which becomes apparent as you play through the events of the first three Rambo movies.
I’ve had a chance to review many games over the years that were varying shades of broken. I’ve encountered countless freezes, buggy updates, and mindless AI. As unforgivably awful as some of these games have been, at least I can say that I’ve always been able to accurately make menu selections in them. Your greatest opponent in Fighter Within is the Kinect motion recognition, which makes a task as simple as choosing “continue” or “quit” an ordeal.
With 30 years separating it from the lore of previous Killzone games and new hardware driving it, Shadow Fall is the perfect time to freshen up the series. The original trilogy is frequently discussed more in terms of technology than gameplay – however competent it may be. With this fourth console installment, Guerrilla Games presents a great showcase title for the graphical capability of the PlayStation 4, but Shadow Fall also succeeds in being the best gameplay experience in the series.
