TowerFall Ascension Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

One of my favorite games of 2013 was Towerfall on Ouya, though it was often a frustrating experience through no fault of its own. When I got three friends together with the intention of playing it, the Ouya couldn’t reliably recognize my controllers or keep them synced at the same time. With the release of Towerfall Ascension, I’m finally able to play a game I love without having to worry about any obnoxious technical issues.

TowerFall Ascension is a fun and approachable battle royale that makes excellent use of its deceptively simple retro looks and classic arcade platforming style. Every second is a mad scramble for ammo, powerups, and survival that, while sadly limited to local play only, kept my group of four players glued to their controllers with its highly competitive action. Even the single-player and co-op Quest mode is worth playing to practice your skills before going into battle.

Remember the good old days of gathering your friends together on the couch for an intense multiplayer session? Indie outfit Matt Makes Games – a one-man development team comprised of Matt Thorson – has created a 2D action multiplayer title named TowerFall Ascension, where players practice the art of archery. This is actually an updated version of the former Ouya exclusive – but does it hit a bullseye on the PlayStation 4?

TowerFall harkens back to the day when you could play a game like GoldenEye 007, when the person next to you got punched in the shoulder for besting you. This is a game with plenty of laughing and pointing at the screen. TowerFall is not deep in options or features, but the frentic gameplay makes for a surprisingly fun time with your friends and family.

There's nothing quite like having a few pals over and playing a hectic local multiplayer game. If that sounds like your idea of a good time then TowerFall Ascension will make a great addition to your gaming library but does it offer more than just a few rounds of fun?

It would have been nice to see an online mode for those gamers who can't corral a group at the drop of a hat, but, at the same time, the idea of hopping online runs opposite the game's main goal of delivering the instant satisfaction, or crushing defeat, that comes from competing with the person right next to you. TowerFall: Ascension calls to mind the communal experience of past console generations, and is well worth recommending to those looking to reignite that nostalgia.
