Whether you dig Sand Land’s vibes and want to go full Mad Max with its combat or experience one of Akira Toriyama’s classic stories told in a fresh package, Bandai Namco and ILCA sold me on this world and its characters, and if you give it a try, you might just get sucked in like quicksand.

Going back to what Serizawa-san told me at Evo last year, he noted that French-Bread could only make UNI2 happen because of how incredible the original game’s community has been over the years. As a result, UNI2 is an “answer to the community’s love and support” in its truest form. It has everything that made the original game so great, with layers lovingly added on top alongside new content that make it a fighting game you definitely shouldn’t overlook if you want to give something freshly baked a try ahead of its Evo 2024 showcase.

Whether you want to sit down for an evening and throw hands with a devil or hop online to grind ranked, there are multiple ways to enjoy both on top of plenty of extras to sink your teeth into. And, with DLC already on the way, there will be plenty of content to enjoy in the future, too.

I really wanted to love this game, especially because I enjoyed my time with it. But there is just no way I can recommend this title to anyone who isn’t either really into Pokémon or ready to ride out the game with their kids or some friends. There’s charm, but it isn’t anything special, and that’s a shame because it had so much potential to be great.

Unfortunately, the lack of appealing single-player content beyond the story and barren online matchmaking variety will limit the time casual players spend with the game once their friends stop playing or if Invasions doesn’t grab their interest.

I know I will be spending hundreds of hours playing with friends and strangers in the Battle Hub, sitting smack dab in Silver Rank, and having a blast.

Overall, One Piece Odyssey is a fun experience for anyone just looking for a relatively easy RPG that has a great cast of characters, an interesting enough story, and plays well within its limits. But those limitations are fairly strict and you could very easily end up losing interest if the battle system or story doesn’t grab you enough early on.
