Sea of Solitude

Sea of Solitude’s potential is never fully realized. It’s beautiful to look at, but it ends up being a lovely splash in a shallow pond. The story was compelling enough that I wanted to see it through to the end, but the repetitive tasks within it lost their charm in the first half. While not a long game, by the end of Sea of Solitude I just wanted things to be done. It felt like it ran out of things to offer me long before it ended. There are some enjoyable, even magical moments, in Sea of Solitude but they’re mixed in with some mediocrity that make it just a decent experience rather than sublime one.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled’s difficulty, memorable track design, and addictive Power Slide mechanic make it a kart racer worth playing, especially competitively (though new players should check out a guide or two first). In single-player it’s richer than what the genre normally provides, but at the expense of a cheap and unforgiving Adventure mode design that can become overly frustrating. Overall, a new HUD, cosmetic options, and the ability to swap characters during the campaign mean there’s simply no contest between playing this and the 1999 original.

This arcade basketball simulator steps onto the courts once more, but did it build on the formula, fall short, or become a blend of both? Find out in our NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 PS4 review.

Candleman: The Complete Journey sets players as a little candle trying to find safety by reaching the lighthouse in the distance. Over the course of your adventure, you’re taken through twelve chapters of 3D, puzzle-platforming. You’re a fairly under powered character. The environments are far grander than you are, and, as a candle, you can only burn for a total of ten seconds before dying. The game’s challenge lies primarily in navigating low-light environments within that ten-second constraint. However, the gameplay evolves from being a mere walk in the dark to becoming a satisfying series of thoughtful interactions with your environment. Unfortunately, it’s too little, too late.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit’s mixed reality novelty excels when you have the space and motivation to make your courses flourish, but occasional tech hiccups and clogged wheels are hazards just as dangerous as any Blue Shell. That said, when I took the time to really lean into the creative challenge building a track presented me with, I was often rewarded by having a blast racing on it. Some familiar mechanics get lost in the translation to AR, but this is still an enjoyable Mario Kart game no matter what roadway I made.

Tell Me Why’s well-written dialogue, mundane yet charming exploration, and whimsical fairy tale angle makes digging into the town of Delos Crossing a good story with decent puzzles. It’s just that the low-stakes decisions and an underwhelming mystery plot left me searching for more depth and consequences in the search for the truth.
