All in all, Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged does little to alter the winning formula of the first title. It’s still an exciting arcade racer with depth and great track designs, but this iteration feels like it’s coasting on its laurels rather than realizing its true potential. The game is out Oct 19 for $49.99 on PC, Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.

Mortal Kombat 1 talks a big game about a fresh start but it’s a relatively safe entry in the now 6th iteration of Netherrealm’s modern fighting game formula, if you include Injustice 1 and 2.  The nostalgia-soaked story campaign is a great deal of fun if you’re already in love with this world and its characters, but the rest of the game’s modes and core fighting just didn’t hold my attention for long. The game is available now for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S as well as a terrible switch port apparently.

It’s rare to see a game in this genre so decisively match the quality of FromSoft themselves. If you love recursive action RPGs, Lies of P is gorgeous, challenging, absorbing, polished, and an absolute must play. The game is out Sep 18 for $59.99 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and included in Xbox Game Pass.

There are even a number of additional secrets and game modes that unlock once you reach the game’s conclusion, and it encourages you to jump right back in, which is honestly a hard invite to pass up. I finished Hi-Fi Rush in about 10 hours on the Hard difficulty, as the game suggested that was the “true” experience, and I loved every second of it. If any part of this mash-up threatens to turn you away, I’d highly suggest you give it a shot regardless because it’s for sure much greater than the sum of its parts. The game is out now for $29.99 on PC and Xbox Series X | S and included with Xbox Game Pass.

MultiVersus

MultiVersus

MultiVersus manages to carve a distinct section of the newly booming platform fighter genre out for itself using some of the biggest fictional names on the planet. The game’s lineup, consisting of cartoon royalty like Bugs Bunny appearing alongside contemporary favorites like Arya Stark from Game of Thrones, is quite telling of how deep WB’s bench can go and how weird the game is willing to get. Over time its roster could easily become a spectacle on par with what Nintendo’s mascot fighter has to offer, and if it can improve the fluff around its solid core, it could very well garner equal levels of hype.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga feels like a big step forward for the Lego games. They’ve always lovingly parodied the Star Wars series in particular, but this is a game that celebrates the combined history of the Lego Star Wars models as much as the movies. It’s a must-play for young and old Star Wars or Lego fans alike. The game is out April 5 for $59.99 on PC and Mac, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and Nintendo Switch.

Nonetheless, I found myself completely enamored with Sifu. It’s absolutely dripping with style, from its painterly aesthetic to its incredible sound design that uses dynamic music to heighten and lower the tension like a well-paced film does. Sifu is the new gold standard for the beat ‘em up genre, and if you don’t mind meeting the challenge, you’ll absolutely love this game. Sifu is out February 8 for $39.99 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and the Epic Games Store.
