Sonic Superstars
Unscored

While Sonic Superstars doesn’t quite reach the highs of the Genesis games, CD, or Mania, not to mention the stronger 3D entries like Adventure or Frontiers, it’s a solid 2D chapter with a handful of great new ideas, and some rather forgettable ones. Charting the quality of the Sonic franchise over the past 30 years can feel like you’re mapping out a particularly windy and turbulent course, but thankfully this one doesn’t drop you right in the middle of a bottomless pit. Sonic Superstars is available now for $59.99 on PC, both generations of Xbox and PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.

A Plague Tale: Requiem
Unscored

A Plague Tale: Requiem is a gorgeous, thrilling, and emotionally resonant adventure that had me gripped from start to finish, and it delivered one of my favorite gaming experiences of 2022. A Plague Tale: Requiem is available on October 18 for $59.99 on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch via the Cloud, and Xbox Series X | S and is also a part of Xbox Game Pass.

As Dusk Falls
Unscored

As Dusk Falls has the bones of a really great interactive narrative, especially when it comes to being able to review your web of decisions. Sadly, the bland writing, uninspired performances, and lack of any meaningful payoff keep it from reaching the heights of the classics it was inspired by. As Dusk Falls is available for $29.99 on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S and is available via Game Pass.

Axiom Verge 2
Unscored

The first game was an impressive take on 8-bit aesthetics and the Metroidvania formula back in 2015. Six years later, Axiom Verge 2 has proven to be a definitive step forward in nearly every department, as well as a zoomed-out expansion on the world and lore that Thomas Happ has created. I’m excited to see where we’re taken to next.

RiME

6.5

Rime’s superficial beauty and interesting mysteries provided enough enjoyment to make me willing to put up with its shallow and familiar elements under the hood. While nothing about Rime is necessarily bad, you can find more interesting versions of nearly every single element of it in other, better games.

Though it only took me just under two hours to complete, the second the credits stopped rolling I immediately restarted What Remains of Edith Finch. Each of the vignettes is so distinct and surprising that I didn’t have enough time to absorb and dissect what I had just played before being whisked away to the next one. But after fully piecing together the threads of the family and sifting through the allegories of their final moments, I was left with a beautiful, heartbreaking mosaic that exudes life, even when mired in death.
