On top of this, Infinite Wealth improves on nearly every aspect of its predecessor. Combat is a great improvement to Like A Dragon, Dondoko Island especially is a fantastic crafting based mini city builder. While the main story has some really slow pacing it builds on Kiryu’s legacy and the new companions and locale is great. It demands a huge amount of your time but it’s fun, bizarrely funny, and heartwarming. As one of the strongest games in the entire series, this could stand out already as a contender for one of the best games for the rest of 2024.

To my knowledge, A Highland Song is likely unprecedented in its representation of Scottish culture in video games. Add in a nice balance of exploration with tough but considered platforming, that is balanced out by uplifting rhythm sections, and you have something special. This absolute reverence for this land and its culture makes A Highland Song the Scottish game.

Wargroove 2 is so frustrating because while parts of it are great, it has not built on the first game’s good foundation. Instead, it chooses to double down on some of that game’s most frustrating aspects.  Whether it was the grating and disruptive storyline, tedious mission design, or limited player expression, it is a well-designed base that quickly evolves into an irritating experience. Tactical strategy fans might enjoy this sequel more because the multiplayer is far superior to most other tactics games and at its heart, there is something great. For me, I can’t look past Wargroove's flaws just because it could have really been great.

Resident Evil 4

Still, I absolutely adore this game. Almost everything new felt fresh and good without straying too far from familiarity. Both games have unique identities and almost need to be treated as such. The remake doesn’t try to replace the original and its perfected level design, but instead, it offers players more freedom and spectacle. I would say almost any other game this good would surpass the original but Resident Evil 4 isn’t just any game. But in overall quality, Resident Evil 4 Remake could still be considered the best remake of all time and it certainly makes as a strong contender for game of the year already.

Ultimately, Coromon will resonate with some people purely by recreating some of that joy they felt during their first Pokémon. It drops a lot of baggage of the series, at its best, feels like how Pokémon could be if it wasn't too tied to appeasing long-time fans. It’s a delight from its polished combat, challenging dungeons, and gorgeous battle environments and sprites. If people can deal with the long areas and puzzles (or even want that) it could be up there with the other kings of the genre.
