The lack of a campaign also hurts. Although not a big deal for a decent part of the fanbase, I did love to play through the campaign to get a nice feeling of the game before jumping into the online portion — plus, I cannot help but feel the game has lost a bit of value while also costing $10 more than the last iteration.
Riders Republic is far from being the best game I have played in 2021, but it is probably the most fun I had this year. It takes the best of the golden age of extreme sports games and combines it all with a vast and vivid open world full of snowy and rocky areas for you to enjoy all the rides available at launch.
Do not get me wrong: Madden NFL 22 is a good game for football fans, but it is also as good as it was three years ago. If you spend hundreds of hours playing the series every year, you should be happy with the (few) new additions and still get your money’s worth. But if you only play a few matches here and there, you are better off downloading a roster update on Madden NFL 21 and waiting for Madden NFL 22 to join the EA Play catalog or go into a deep sale.
I Am Dead is a special game because it gets you thinking. Not about the characters themselves, but about life as a whole and everything that surrounds it. Its puzzles are nowhere near challenging and the exploration is limited to small areas, but they are still enjoyable thanks to the heartwarming story that unfolds after each section. When combining it all with the vivid visuals and remarkable voice work, you cannot help but feel right at home.
Eldest Souls incorporates two of the best traits from a Souls game: challenging boss-fights and a minimalist storytelling approach. You will die a lot, but at the same time you will never feel cheated by the game — au contraire, you will find yourself on that “one more try” loop, unable to put the controller down until you find out a nice build combination to defeat a boss. And when you do, the satisfaction is near-instant.
Cris Tales sets a high bar when describing itself as a love letter to some of the best JRPGs of all time, but indie studio Dreams Uncorporated manages to exceed expectations by delivering a charming game with unique and challenging combat mechanics and a gorgeous artstyle. The characters are interesting, and the ability to peer into their past and future makes you care even more for them – especially the protagonist and its allies, which will travel alongside you during the game’s 20-30 hours of gameplay.
