Is it a T. rex? Is it a space rocket? Is it a giant ham? No. It’s Mario with a magic hat that can possess pretty much anything.

The idea behind Sea of Thieves is so brilliant that you can scarcely believe no one had thought of it before.

If Lewis Hamilton is anything to go by, there are three prerequisites for becoming a racing pro: practice, patience and a planet-sized ego. As ever, Gran Turismo Sport goes big on the first two to deliver the latter once you’ve conquered its never-ending plethora of races, time trials and challenges.

It seems obvious in hindsight: an online shooter where head-shotting your mates is totally irrelevant, why wouldn’t it be a cult classic? On Wii U of all consoles. And yet here we are with a second Splatoon for Nintendo Switch just two years after the first game wrapped its inky tentacles around our heartstrings.

Maybe your wooden club will shatter at the wrong moment and a Bokoblin will shank you into an early grave. Perhaps you’ll get stuck in thunderstorm, step into a pond of water and end up electrocuted. Or you could just tumble off an enormous cliff-face after running out of stamina mid-climb.

The horrific monotony of trench warfare and the Lost Generation it birthed doesn’t really sit easy with what we expect from a first-person shooter. It’s hard to really enjoy that headshot when you’re surrounded by mutilated bodies writhing around in a muddy abyss, you know?

Gears of War 4

There were a lot of things I wanted to hate about Gear of War 4. Its heaving machismo, which sees burly men pummel away their woes with automatic rifles. Its relentless glorification of ultraviolence, which splatters your screen with red stuff at every given opportunity. And its adherence to a now decade-old cover-based combat formula that wasn’t particularly innovative the first time around.

Imagine you’re stuck alone on an alien wasteland, with no one for company except a robot dog and your own tenuous grip on reality.
