Since I never played the earlier games, I can’t make the call as to whether or not this game was worth waiting 11 years for. Saying that, I’ve been waiting since I saw the game at GamesCom last year to get my hands on it, and it was definitely worth it. Like Warlock 2, this is a game that’s trying to be more creative with the fairly rigid ‘Civ’ template, and combined with the tactical battles and challenge of a hostile world, this is definitely one of the better strategy games to co...

The new engine is stunning. When you do manage to get a decent battle going, it is a bit of a visual treat.

There’s no reason you can’t jump into CiM2 now: there’s still a deep, detail-orientated game for you to sink your teeth into, and micro-managers will love the amount of tweaking and fine tuning options you can make to individual lines. Once you get into the right frame of mind, there’s hours upon hours of game time to have, with the campaign map as well as the other ‘skirmish’ maps, so getting your money’s worth isn’t a problem either. Those of you wanting to watch your pennie...

Borderlands 2

Say what you want about the original Borderlands, it sold enough to bring us another one – for the most part the second game has fixed or improved the things about the original game that let it down. Beyond that though, this is one funny, entertaining game that should hopefully provide you with plenty of entertainment over the coming weeks, especially with DLC already planned and on the way. Alone it can be a bit grindy (you could say that about a lot of games mind) but even if you just hav...

To those who already know what Minecraft is, then the 360 version may seem a bit bare, but then this version isn’t really for you. 4J Studios’ adaptation fits in perfectly with the Arcade theme, and we hope there’s framework in place to slowly add in content and features, much like what they’re doing with the PC SKU. As we outlined above, once the initial ‘oooooo’ factor wears off, singleplayer does get a bit tiresome if you haven’t got a purpose, but then all you need is a coup...

But, assuming you’re fine with that, then Skyrim is, in a word, amazing. Sure, it has its problems, its oddities, and again some of these are just down to how the game is made and others just need some extra patching or work done to it. There is always a danger with games like these that you’ll get bored, or you’ll lose your drive - Bethesda have done a wonderful job of staving off that feeling in this game. People commented on how much of a cop out the main quest in Oblivion was toward...

Battlefield 3

There is one last thing that, due to words spoken and gauntlets thrown, everyone’s going to want to know: who’s won the war of the FPS this year. Whilst Battlefield 3 is an incredibly strong contender, it’s a little bit rough around the edges, and some facets of its make-up may not be able to stand against the competition. Call of Duty does do what it does extremely well, it has to be said. But at the end of the day, they both kind of cater to different crowds anyway. If you’re lookin...

The Total War Community, especially in recent years, has become a bit hard to please. We’re confident though that this will meet most of your expectations. Given the nature of the franchise, don’t expect a ton of depth on the scale that Paradox manages, but there’s enough here to play around with. This is the most fully featured Total War to date, and a great homage to the game that launched the series. There’s more we haven’t talked about, but if we told you everything about the ga...
