In terms of longevity, it took me around 3 hours to complete the entirety of AVICII Invector’s collection of music. As I completed each song, I also gained access to their harder counterparts. The skill-ceiling is moderately high and required me to practice and memorize sections in order to get higher grades. It will take me a while to fully master each of these tracks, and thanks to an online leaderboard I’m motivated to keep attempting to raise my score higher.

While video games are, indeed, my favourite entertainment medium, music comes a very close second. So whenever I get my hands on a music/rhythm game, I can’t help but be overjoyed. And while music games have since become less of a mainstay after the egregious milking of the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises, they can still be incredibly fun when handled with care. That’s what you’re getting with AVICII Invector, a wonderful and wickedly-addictive rhythm action game that isn’t just one of the finest music games in recent years but is also a perfect farewell to the late and influential Swedish DJ Tim Bergling, aka AVICII.

Tim “AVICII” Bergling’s death was a tragedy. It’s always heart-wrenching when we lose someone. In his case, he’s been survived by a catalog of music and creative endeavors that has continued to grow since his passing in 2018. One of those projects was a rhythm game with Hello There Games. While he never got to see the culmination of this collaboration, the ensuing AVICII Invector is a tribute in every sense of the word. Not only does a percent of its profits go to his The Tim Bergling Foundation, but it gives people a chance to experience his songs alone or with friends in a stylish, relatively simple title.

AVICII Invector proves to be something of surprise. Edge of the seat rhythm action, great visuals and a varied and moving soundtrack make this a fantastic retrospective of a genuinely unique artist.

If you’ve ever enjoyed one of AVICII’s songs even just a little bit, AVICII Invector makes for one of the best music rhythm games this generation. Outside of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, it’s hard for the genre to feel so immersive without a plastic instrument in your hand. Yet AVICII Invector makes rhythm gameplay feel natural with a controller. Once you’ve played one track, it’s hard to stop yourself jumping straight into another, and another – and before you know it, you’ve blasted through all 25 in one sitting.
