Battle Brothers is a well-made game from the technical standpoint, but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired.
It's clear that Battle Brothers is meant to be challenging for even the most hardcore tactical RPGamers. The lack of help and optimization issues for consoles could have some quitting before the mechanics even have a chance to become fun.
There are some ideas that just lend themselves to good video games. It’s why we’ve seen so many Viking games lately. A culture devoted to naval raids and axe fighting is also a culture dedicated to good game mechanics. The same principle applies to Battle Brothers, a strategy game where you command a company of struggling, mud-splattered medieval mercs. It’s not just a good game, it’s a strategy masterpiece. Unfortunately, a shaky port makes the Switch version of the game clearly inferior.
I really enjoy its no-nonsense approach to its creative vision. It’s a mercenary sandbox. There’s no main plot or story shoehorned onto it. It places you in a role and tells you to make it work. There is no fluff in Battle Brothers. Every piece of it works together to form a cohesive package, nothing is out of place.
