Boti: Byteland Overclocked Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Boti: Byteland Overclocked isn’t a massive grand adventure but a short and sweet romp through more concise levels. You should treat it more like the 3D stages of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time than an open sprawl like Super Mario Odyssey.
Ultimately I’m a bit torn on Boti: Byteland Overclocked. On one hand, it’s gorgeous and charming, but it’s gameplay and the myriad of bugs I ran into really soured the experience. On the other hand, Boti is still fun to play and I wouldn’t mind going back for the collectibles and a hundred percent run in the future. ∎
Boti: Byteland Overclocked is an enjoyable and simple retro-inspired platformer with plenty of collect-a-thon features that are all too welcome. But it's only an enjoyable experience when it works, and after level three, it's a coin flip on whether it does.
While I found its colorful and charming world largely impressive, with some fairly decent, if familiar, gameplay, my time with Byteland Overclocked was unfortunately buggy, broken, and ultimately disappointing.
Boti: Byteland Overclocked’s Steam page is a bit confusing. It is a game about robots inside a computer, but the game does not seem to reflect that very much. The aesthetics are that of a generic, kid-friendly platformer, very bright with greenery, blue skies, crates, and little fellas scattered around everywhere. But do children know about the inside of a PC? RAM, kernels, GPUs, overclocking; these are not things that they would be particularly fascinated by, are they?
