Castle Crashers Remastered

Castle Crashers Remastered is a phenomenal title that offers players hours and hours of wacky fun. The Nintendo Switch version is the definitive way to play this game with the ability to play whenever wherever. With its wacky boss fights, fantastic combat, and plenty of humorous moments, Castle Crashers Remastered still stands tall as one of the best Beat 'Em Ups ever made.

When I heard that Castle Crashers was being ported to the Nintendo Switch, my immediate thought was, “YAS!”. But it was my less euphoric second thought that was, “How has a game as good as Castle Crashers not been ported to the Switch already?” Thankfully, my first thought was 100% justified while my second thought no longer matters, because we now have Castle Crashers on the Switch!

As far as beat ‘em up brawlers go on the Switch, Castle Crashers Remastered is one of the finest titles available for the platform. Tight controls, many multiplayer modes, a great art direction and a wealth of replayable content make this an easy “ol’ reliable” game that you’ll surely be revisiting with friends for years to come. All the same, it’s also far from a perfect experience, as the repetitive nature of combat and the reliance on damage-sponges to pad out the runtime make for a title that can tend to overstay its welcome in extended sessions. Castle Crashers Remastered seems like a no-brainer, but since it's virtually the same game that released seven years ago, it still has the same flaws. At times the game can feel like a repetitive slog, and the character progression isn't very satisfying. The boss fights are still a highlight for the most part, but some of them are just irritating, especially in co-op with four people filling up the screen. I maintain that Castle Crashers is a good game. Great, even, if you’re playing cooperatively. But seven years later, I’m not nearly as smitten. I just can’t endlessly grind battles like I used to.
