Cultist Simulator Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Cultist Simulator won't be for everyone as the learning curve is fairly steep and it is a pretty unforgiving game. Anyone who loves puzzles, interesting games and solid narrative will find a lot to love.

A compelling and atmospheric singleplayer narrative card game.

As mentioned at the start, this is an unconventional game. It’s a narrative game, but it tells a story through incomplete fragments that must be ordered and pieced together. It’s a resource management sim, albeit simplified and purposely without documentation. At the end of the day, the one thing I can definitively say is that it is a game that I enjoyed, but also one where I can very well understand if others dislike it.

I was surprised by my experience with Cultist Simulator as it should have been a game that really grabbed me. The mood, the setting, and the pedigree of the writing are all perfectly in line with my interests, but I found the combination of the card playing and having to sit at a PC never truly gelled. Or even there, glimmering under your skin if you peel it back a little. Cultist Simulator invites you in to sit down and play a game of cards for a while, and puzzle this out before your inevitable demise. A self-described “roguelike narrative card game”, Alexis Kennedy’s latest offering is a Lovecraftian one of solitaire, struggling to maintain the delicate balance of experimentation and a mysterious ...

Fans of text based adventures that toy with the darkness beyond the veil will surely be familiar with Fallen London from Failbetter Games, if not your surely familiar with the Sunless Sea from the same studio. The thing that ties these two games together is basic gameplay partnered with some unnervingly good narrative and story telling. Well lead creator of those titles, Alexis Kennedy, has launched his next project with the brand new two person studio Weather Factory. I’m sure this will b...
