Dandy Ace is a great first roguelike and a fun take on the genre. Its very fun combat, not too sharp too fast difficulty, quick load times, and lack of central hub or anything to drag the time between runs on makes it extremely playable and very easy to get sucked into.
Dandy Ace is a sensational roguelike that can contend with the very best the genre has to offer. Although gameplay can get a little repetitive, its colorful visuals and well-thought-out combat mechanics more than make up for that. This is a challenging yet fun game that is well worth your time.
If you take a look at Dandy Ace‘s trailer, some might start complaining about this game being a carbon copy of one of the best games of 2020 (and arguably the best roguelite of all time), Hades. I did that little experiment with some friends and even some colleagues from WTMG, and heard a lot of “oh my god, this is just like Hades“. When looking at Dandy Ace as a package deal, there are various high and lows to note. The vast number of cards and enemies provide tons of variety, but the similar level design roots the game in familiarity. The soundtrack and visuals are brilliant, but it can't shake the feeling that it really is just a run-of-the-mill roguelike in a genre suffering from oversaturation. If you're a fan of the genre however, Dandy Ace won't set you wrong. It's designed to a high standard, and I encountered zero bugs, but does it contend with the best roguelikes out there? Not particularly.
Dandy Ace is solid roguelike that should appeal to fans of the genre. It’s a shame the story can’t be as magical as its setting and appearance, but at the very least the combat is engaging and the option to play your way is a welcome addition. If you’re willing to invest some time, there’s much to discover within.
