Demon's Mirror Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Demon's Mirror is an excellent roguelike deck-builder with many systems that never get convoluted. Even if the odds are almost always against you and the rewards aren't too great, the gameplay loop is extremely addictive and you won't stop playing.
How can something so familiar sound so unique? That’s the question a game like Demon’s Mirror dares to pose, and successfully answers it at the same time. It’s a bit of two popular genres and it doesn’t outstay its welcome; actually, I’d love to have a little more time to play around with the board instead of the brief experience in each turn. The practical graphics and organized design seal the deal for this game, which won’t make any waves and doesn’t seem to offer a whole lot of content without repetition setting in, but is bound to be a good one for fans of the genre(s).
Being a fan of deckbuilders, I’m always excited to check out the new kid on the block when it comes to card games, especially if they are spicing up the genre. Taking the best parts of a card battler and classic ‘match three’ board busters, Demon's Mirror manages to create something familiar but still fiercely unique and unquantifiably vast.
Demon's Mirror is basically Slay the Spire, with the addition of tile-matching gameplay. It's a novel idea but ultimately it doesn't quite pull it off, with too many ideas that don't all gel together as well as they should. Still, if you're a deck-building roguelike fan, it's worth a look — but there are definitely better games in the genre.
While I love genre-bending and mash-ups, I was pretty disappointed with Demon’s Mirror. What should have been a mix of two great genres ended up becoming a tedious and frustrating chore. The art style is mimicking Slay the Spire and is uninspired. I found myself immediately put-off from most of what should have made Demon’s Mirror great.
