Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
When you think of the best games of 2016, which games come to mind? Overwatch? Titanfall II? Inside? Well, my 2016 could be summarised by two games in particular. The first one was Doom, a game that, to this day, is probably my favorite title from this entire generation. The second one is an odd choice, a PS4 game I hadn’t even heard of prior to randomly finding it at a game store next to my house: Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth. This game ended up becoming my other favorite game of 2016, as we...
Two of the best and most stylish Digimon games arrive on the Switch in an essential bundle
Despite the timing of when it first debuted, Digimon never quite seemed to hit the same level of popularity that it’s monster raising counterpart Pokemon did. That being said, the franchise has a very hardcore fanbase, and has had a number of games in varying quality. Fortunately for those fans of Digimon, Cyber Sleuth and it’s followup Hacker’s Memory are both very strong entries for the Digimon franchise, and Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition wraps these two excellent RPGs into a must-have for fans not only of Digimon but of monster-collecting games as well.
While it may not add anything to make it worth double dipping outside of some previous additional content, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition gains the element of portability on the Nintendo Switch that makes the game more accessible than ever to play as you aim to collect the more than 300 available Digimon and save the real and digital worlds.
All in all, Cyber Sleuth is worth giving a try for die-hard JRPG fans or those that have wanted to give the genre a shot but found early game tutorials too overbearing. It's a little bit of Persona mixed with a whole lot of Pokemon, and it offers something for fans of both of those franchises. It may have a story that's a little difficult to follow at times, but it more than makes up for it with quite a bit of charm. Players will have to get passed the oddities of Digimon's world, but doing so should prove to be a pretty rewarding experience.
Back in the ’90s, Pokemon was one of those media crazes that supposedly corrupted the children. In particular, certain religious figures condemned it for its “demonic origins” amid more widespread bouts of Satanic panic. Even as a kid, whenever I saw this play out, I let out a sigh of relief. At least they didn’t know about the weird cartoon where kids fought the vampire devil and his puppet sidekick. From scythe-wielding phantoms and living guns all the way to Satan himself, Digimon has so many of those “questionable” elements that it’s a wonder it never drew that type of ire. Releasing two d...
