El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron combines gorgeous artistic design with enticing combat to create a memorable adventure.
It can feel a little dated in terms of its approach to combat, but the game is so beautiful, so different, so utterly weird and wonderful that this is of no real consequence.
The bare minimum was done to port El Shaddai: Ascesion of the Metatron over to PC, but 10 years later it's still an incredible journey.
Completely unique and good fun to play, El Shaddai is a refreshing change and well worth adding to your collection. If nothing else, it's a joy to the senses
The PC version has no mouse and keyboard support, which might turn some players away, but otherwise it seems like a fine port. It also comes with a PDF copy of Lucifer’s Fall: Chronicles of Ceta, accessible from the launch menu as a clear bonus. This is a collection of three short stories that, according to the foreword, didn’t make the final cut of El Shaddai. It’s a nice way to further expand the story and lore of a very unique game.
If anything, El Shaddai is worth looking into just for the experience. Is it a good game? Honestly, I wouldn’t say so. But the opportunity to get lost in beautiful worlds inspired by obscure bible references may be worth the price of admission to some.
A second playthrough with the HUD certainly provides for an improved experience. And the game’s aesthetics are its saving grace. But regardless, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron simply isn’t a good game. And that’s too bad, because it certainly had the makings of one.
