Elden Ring Nightreign is a game that understands its own identity and hones in on that. The returning bosses are a treat for older FromSoft players, and the new mechanics are fun yet challenging to wrap your head around. With future content planned, I see myself returning to Nightreign with each new boss drop for years to come.

Despite a few technical hiccups and some shortcomings in long-term replayability, Elden Ring: Nightreign is an ambitious and surprisingly well-executed twist on the Soulslike formula. As we wrap this review up, I can honestly say I’m impressed. Fromsoft took a big gamble by pursuing a game of this caliber that is outside their usual palette, and dare I say it is a great experience when it’s firing on all cylinders. Certain things, such as a lack of in-game chat and weird balancing issues for anything other than the three-person queue, make it a little trivial, but the game plays flawlessly for the most part and retains much of what made the 2022 Elden Ring game so fun. Elden Ring Nightreign is a very clever game. FromSoftware has produced a multiplayer-focused “Souls” experience that borrows some of the best ideas from the multiplayer giants while retaining the Soulslike formula and style. It’s not really for me. I’m a mega Souls fan, but I’m there for the dark fantasy storytelling and exploration more than the action and bosses. But I can appreciate what FromSoftware has done with this, and I certainly think the team has nailed what they set out to achieve with it.

Nightreign isn’t even a full-priced game, and I’ve already put over 100 fun-filled hours into it, with more to come. I’ll take that any day over a full-priced 15 to 20-hour “cinematic experience” the industry seems to be in love with. The way Nightreign blends the replayability of a rogue-lite game with the skillful nature you come to expect of a FromSoft game is nothing short of amazing.
