It’s the only time she displays any degree of autonomy and you could argue it’s in her own interest to stop herself getting gunned down. But aside from taking the choice away from the player, it can result in more deaths. On several occasions, I moved over to a pillar only to overshoot because Maya stopped sneaking. This put me in the sights of another Roundie, with predictable consequences. This isn’t a game-ruiner, but it is a pretty odd design decision.
Emotional games disguised as puzzle adventures seem to be all the rage these days. Ever Forward jumps on this trend, telling us the story of Maya and her mother in-between puzzle solving. It’s a section of gaming that’s becoming more congested and difficult to find the real stand outs. Just look at how many other puzzle games I’ve reviewed during my time with PSLS.
With some quite tricky puzzles, Ever Forward is a rather challenging puzzler. The luscious graphics and lovely soundtrack definitely help the experience, but I’d have liked a bit more game. The pacing is a touch on the slow side too, so not one for the impatient.
