Expeditions: Rome Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Expeditions: Rome is astounding in every area I was presented with. Constantly I felt like there were tons of things for me to explore and pay attention to, and truly simulates how I picture leading an entire war campaign.
Expeditions: Rome is a game that is well-deserving of a Roman Triumph.
Logic Artists is a studio primarily known for the Expeditions series. This Rome game marks the third installment. I never played their first game, Expeditions: Conquistadors, which received mixed reviews. Plus, role playing as a Conquistador didn’t appeal to me. Their next game, Expeditions: Vikings was much more my speed. Released in 2017, Vikings was a tactical RPG that let you play as a Norseman or woman establishing a colony in England. The writing was pretty good and the tactical combat scratched an itch, but it’s not a game that stuck with me. I haven’t been recommending Expeditions: Vik...
Expeditions: Rome is a masterpiece of a turn-based RPG, featuring an impressive web of interconnected systems and features.
I'll make this as simple as possible: If you like the idea of controlling a Roman Legion and conquering in the name of Rome, you will like Expeditions: Rome. If that doesn't sound like fun, then this game won't be for you.
If I knew anybody within Logic Artists, I'd be pretty concerned about the future of that person's father. Logic Artists seems to have a thing about the murder of a father and the subsequent vengeance of that murder. I wouldn't be surprised to find an anonymous hitman employed to kill one father, only to have the studio band together as a group of companions on an empire-spanning mission to avenge this murder. Much like Expeditions: Viking (review here), Expeditions: Rome also involves the murder of a father and the story leading on from that event.
Developer Logic Artists takes another step back into history with its latest title in the Expeditions series. Expeditions: Rome presents a thoroughly enjoyable role-playing experience in the late Roman Republic.
Expeditions: Rome is an impressive tactical RPG with captivating strategic combat, as well as a lot more heart than expected.
Ancient Rome’s legacy will never die. I’m not talking about in culture, politics, or architecture either. I mean Rome’s legacy in video games, especially those of the strategic kind. Its place in history as a landmark of wartime strategy means that, for strategy game developers looking for a setting, Rome is an easy answer. Not a bad one either, even though sometimes I wish more developers took a larger view of history. Still, I can’t deny that its easy basis has formed the foundation...
Rome wasn't built in a day, but did it really take this long?

Expeditions: Rome feels more like a mod with Roman themes than a fully fleshed-out game. From the customization to the design, there are many details that feel unfinished or lack the depth expected of games in the strategy genre. Still, there is fun to be had if players are willing to focus exclusively on the tactics and strategy. Those looking for more of the same coming off Expeditions: Viking will be satisfied enough, even if this new title doesn't feature any major innovations.
