Though Japanese players ended up getting two 8-bit sequels to this game before their Famicom stepped aside for its Super upgrade, this is the only NES era Final Fantasy game that ever made it to us in the U.S. Its appeal, then, was never diminished in its own generation here -- it was never surpassed on its home hardware. And that intact appeal and lasting value for American gamers is more than enough reason to recommend owning it again now, for 500 Wii Points. While the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters aren’t perfect, they’re certainly the best and most convenient ways to play these classic games. The soundtracks are lovingly orchestrated and the pixel art is gorgeous, though the latter does lose some detail in the translation. Each game feels great to play, but I do wish extra content from previous releases or remakes had been included.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is the kind of game that will unfortunately only appeal to a relatively limited demographic. Enjoyable co-op chaos with your friends is the main draw here, but the lack of same screen or even local Switch multiplayer substantially hobbles that appeal. Couple that with simplistic gameplay that fails to provide you with much of a hook to stay with it long term, and you’re left with a rather middling experience that doesn’t do much to incite strong feelings one way or another.
