We live in an era where dating simulators are plentiful, multifaceted and, oftentimes, bizarre. Whether you’re courting a selection of eligible fathers looking for love, handsome warlords from a bygone dynasty, or an actual horse, there’s truly something for everyone, and it can be hard for any one entry to stick out from the crowd.
Monster Prom is Hatoful Horror. It is an offbeat take on the horrors of teenage relationships. A great art style and some amazing writing make it easy to just plug in and replay. If you are ready to go back to high school, but just because this time it might really be the end of the world, then Monster Prom is worth a selling your soul for, or just buy it on Steam instead.
Monster Prom had so much potential and so much to offer that I couldn't wait to tear into it. And on a superficial level, it's an interesting experiment that I thought I would love. Unfortunately, just like the monsters you're courting, once you get to know it it's only a great-looking shell with some fairly rotten insides. I'd like to see updates come down the line to open up new romance options, additional things to do, more purpose for the stats, and improved writing. I’m not going to lie, I was really excited for Monster Prom. The premise absolutely ticked all my boxes, and then, the game delivers on every last one. Dating sim? Yes. Cool monster designs? Yes. Characters that date you regardless of gender? Yes. Funny, insightful, off the cuff writing that doesn’t punch down? Yes. My favourite Youtube voice actors? Yes.
