Morphite is a puzzling a game. It might not be exactly what the developers of No Man’s Sky were trying to make, but the comparison is almost impossible to ignore. Jumping across the galaxy, you wander lonely worlds looking, cataloging the native wildlife and collecting rare minerals. Morphite is definitely its own game though, with the small studio using much less computer generation. The worlds you can explore in Morphite are linear spaces that slowly open out for the player, with creatures that are not Frankenstein’s monsters of computer-generated randomness.
Exploring the galaxy means many things to many different people. Are you seeking out wonder, awe, bloody conquest or total harmony? Maybe you want none of these things. Maybe you just want to relax, to lose yourself in the peaceful rhythms of a pastel, low-poly universe. If for some reason, that last answer speaks to you, then Morphite is going to be right up your alley. Traversing the galaxy has never before been so calming.

During your travels it's really up to you how much you want to discover, catalogue and upgrade. Morphite isn't a bad little first-person adventure but thrill seekers looking for a stop gap before Metroid Prime 4 could end up feeling short changed; rather than cause your pulse to race this jaunt through the uncharted regions of the universe is quite laid back and curiously lacking in excitement. It ranks as an enjoyable - if...
There’s a chance after going to each planet, stocking up on fuel at space stations and trading scans for credits, that you’ll encounter a hostile ship or two. These parts boil down to dodging enemy fire while firing back at the same time. On the Switch, this is significantly trickier than ground combat as performance suffers, but it’s generally quite dull anyway.
Morphite is a first person space exploration game where you explore the galaxy as Myra Kale. Visit procedurally generated planets, battle creatures, research animals and plants as you unravel the mystery surrounding Morphite! This is starting to sound familiar. Procedurally generated planets… research… exploration… first person – sounds somewhat similar to a certain other space exploration indie title that came out last year. A title which unfortunately was not received so well.
