One of the more distinctive horror games to be released in the past few years, Mundaun tells childhood stories with an adult filter, a foreign narrative in a universal core, and hosts gameplay that, while occasionally obtuse, is a hop, skip, and a jump away from other titles in the same vein.

Hurt only by the Switch's take on its visuals, Mundaun delivers above and beyond its appearances and offers a robust, constantly compelling adventure game. It isn't particularly scary, but it is rich in atmosphere and hosts plenty of gameplay variety and good ideas. We found that it never compromised its tone or fell foul of any gameplay glitches, although as mentioned the visuals aren't quite up to snuff. It's a minor thing, though, as Mundaun should keep your attention from beginning to, well, one or more of its multiple endings.

Horror games are no longer a small cult genre in video games. P.T. brought about a resurgence in celebrating the subtle but surreal, while 4v1 games saw titles like Dead by Daylight pay quite a bit of homage to the stalker/slasher films. The town of Mundaun is the perfect alpine destination; snowy ski slopes populated with avalanche mustering Yetis, unholy Scarecrows grazing in acres of farmland and twisted Beekeepers patrolling their desolate plateau. It’s a holiday for all!

This is an incredibly unique title and in my opinion, well worth the effort that has clearly been poured into it. Considering how highly detailed the original sketches must have been this really is a work of art in video game form, that needs to be seen to be believed. Mundaun may be inspired by local folklore but it keeps you guessing right up until the end. Catch the bus up to Mundaun, after your visit I can assure you of one thing – you will never forget it.

Mundaun's lack of polish isn't undone by its startlingly unnerving atmosphere. Gamers without an appreciation for the slow moments in games will find themselves befuddled. Everyone else might find a hidden gem.

Despite the issues thrown my way while playing Mundaun, I kept going because it had me hooked. From the opening moments, it had my attention in a vice-like grip. Some aspects of its gameplay threatened to loosen that grip from time to time, but I soon get over them because I wanted to unravel the mystery at the heart of the game. With multiple endings, there’s reason to return, too. Offering a spine-chilling and creepy setting and atmosphere, Mundaun is a great experience that doesn't feel like anything I have played before. Its gameplay systems all blend together surprisingly well and it is just the right length. The strengths help alleviate some of the issues I had, but even with those present, it is well worth a play for fans of the genre.

Mundaun is a horror adventure with a compelling mystery, all wrapped up in some well-executed horror. Unfortunately, the game is often weighed down by some of its core mechanics, such as combat and inventory management. Despite that, it’s still a unique experience that offers a fresh approach to the horror genre.

While Mundaun often presents you with a problem and lets you figure out for yourself how to solve it rather than guiding you every step of the way, it also has some features that are quite friendly, such as the ability to summon the Muvel from posters set up throughout the environments and the fact that useful optional items can be found in multiple spots in case you missed them earlier.
