Paranormasight: The Mermaid's Curse Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Humanity has always been fascinated by the supernatural. Tall tales and legends persist through the ages, passed down through tradition and storytelling, for many reasons, whether parables, entertainment, or sometimes, bearing shreds of a greater truth. Paranormasight: The Mermaid's Curse is steeped in these concepts, throwing the player into an enthralling rural mystery filled with murder, betrayal, love, and curses.

Paranormasight: The Mermaid's Curse is just as interesting a game as its predecessor, and the island setting and its folklore is fantastic.

Even though I haven’t played the original PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo, I heard some many great things about it from my late colleague, Fernando Da Costa. When I heard about a sequel to Square Enix’s critically acclaimed visual novel, I figured now would be as good a time as any to see what all the fuss is about. Was PARANORMASIGHT: The Mermaid’s Curse able to wow as much as the original, or does it sink to the depths of mediocrity?

Swapping J-horror for maritime mystery, The Mermaid’s Curse remains a cerebral treat with its clever encyclopedia-led puzzles and atmospheric 1980s setting.

It’s spooky rather than scary but with a great script and characters, and some smart puzzles, this is a must-play for anyone who enjoys the kind of stories only video games can tell.
