There’s enough meat to the game (it tracks ELO ratings for the chess hardcore) to keep you coming back for more, but really what VooFoo studios have done really well here is craft a relaxing and entertaining little chess game for everyone, not just the hardcore. It checks all the AI boxes and has as a bonus the kind of presentation that means you don’t need to be a chess master to enjoy your time with this one.

Pure Chess is a fine game in its own right, but the online multiplayer ruins it quite a bit and is very ill suited for a home console. You can still have fun with local friends and there are some modes for loners, but it does leave somewhat of a strong bitter taste in the mouth. The presentation is quite well put together and it is quite suitable for a pick up and play game, but it is not the ultimate Chess experience. It’s somewhat of a shame.

But my greatest memories of playing chess happen to be with other people at cafes, clubs and in New York City’s Washington Square Park, not by myself in front of a computer or hunched over a ...
