Q.U.B.E: Director's Cut Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Q.U.B.E: Director's Cut is an excellent physics based puzzler that offers enough variety and challenge to its puzzles to satisfy even the most lateral of thinkers. Obvious comparisons will be made to the Portal franchise but for players who never played those games it offers a fresh, new dimension to physics based puzzling and in terms of the story, it offers an altogether more mature and serious narrative throughout. At the price, it's a must-have for any puzzle fan.
The striking visual style pairs very well with the story telling. The silent protagonist awakes in a room where the walls, floors, ceilings are all made of white and gray cubes. These cubes transform and move in a variety of different ways to form staircases, elevator platforms and ultimately the base for all puzzles. The stark contrast between the white cubes and the colored cubes make identifying a puzzle simple, yet immersive.
The music and voice acting is great and the puzzles clever. Glitches in the physics and difficulties in working camera angles and timing elements into puzzle solving definitely detracts from the experience though.
Q.U.B.E. Director's Cut doesn't bring any additional "new" features to the table (aside from the time trials, voice work, and fantastic score), but the original product's core gameplay still shines on its own. The game's narrative is suspenseful and the puzzles are fantastic brainteasers. For just $9.99, the puzzle platformer is well worth the 2GB it will take up on your system.
Q.U.B.E Director’s Cut is a very good puzzle game that incorporates a decent story that keeps you guessing right until the very end. The minimalist design throughout the game allows the puzzles to stand out, and nothing feels wasted. Toxic Games have created quite a memorable experience with this game. There is some issue with the final portion of the game with a couple of spikes in difficulty, but overall Q.U.B.E Director’s Cut is a fun and accessible title that offers a fair challenge. If you’re into puzzle platformers then you should strongly consider picking this up.
