Professional reviews from gaming critics
Redemption Reapers is a strange, sometimes admirable, and sometimes frustrating tactical RPG. It has several intriguing components conceptually, both in its narrative and mechanics. But in places it falters in execution, leaving behind an uneven though interesting experience.
Just as you thought the turn-based RPG bus was already full, Redemption Reapers squeezes into the back seat with another, substantial take on a popular genre. Well, “another take” might be generous. From its gothic fantasy setting to its stock characters, Redemption Reapers sticks pretty close to the basics.
A gritty and gory tactical RPG, Redemption Reapers has a few good things going for it, but ultimately the unbalanced difficulty and lack of engaging narrative may put many players off.
Join the fight for survival alongside the Ashen Hawk Brigade as they struggle to fend off an invasion by the vicious Mort. Use turn-based tactics to keep your party together against difficult odds. Switch version reviewed.
There used to be a kind of genre for this dime-novel fantasy story that's mostly only being explored by unfortunately conservative writers in both style and politics; while Redemption Reapers does absolutely nothing to reinvent the wheel the, call of fantasy is that the wheel seldom needs re-inventing, it just needs to be given one or two more turns to bring things around again. Much of modern fantasy tends to embrace the weird or roll their eyes at it, b...
After the successful release of Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights, which I loved, I was anticipating what Adglobe and Binary Haze were going to put out next. When they announced they were making Redemption Reapers, a strategy RPG, I was interested on how they were going to make that genre their own. After all, Ender Lilies had some great ideas with its combat that helped it stand out from the crowd. So I was expecting them to bring that same inventive effort to the SRPG genre. Would the...
Redemption Reapers is unyielding in its pessimism that spreads to the deep and enjoyable combat system in this tactical RPG from AdGlobe. Unfortunately, a barely there plot prevents it from being a miserable masterpiece.
The game itself is competently executed, and if I try really hard to ignore the rip-off side of things, I would call it a decent game. But even then it has some pretty significant flaws. So while I did derive some enjoyment from it, due to its rough edges (among other things) it’s really hard to recommend to anyone unless you’re a die-hard tactical RPG fan who doesn’t want to own a Nintendo system and/or doesn’t like the Fire Emblem or even the Final Fantasy Tactics IPs. Which is unfo...
