Ride is a fantastic new IP for Milestone that taps into quite a niche market. The poor soundtrack and long load times are the only things that sour the experience, but this is still an exceptional foray into the joy of motorcycling. Its lengthy World Tour mode will have you captivated for hours as you strive to build an extensive collection of motorcycles and become the world’s number 1. For me, this is the closest to Gran Turismo a motorcycling game has ever been, and that is certainly an achievement.
When you first become acquainted with an avid motorcyclist, you can sometimes apprehend from her enthusiasm the exact reason why she loves to ride. In my experience, it’s mostly in the way she describes her bike. If she refers to it as though it were a person or living creature rather than a complex machine, she, like my father, probably appreciates the freedom. If she mentions anything about its speed or the concentration necessary to control it, then she, like me, may be more about the focus. Developer Milestone are the industry vets when it comes to motorbike games. Responsible for the MotoGP and MXGP franchises, RIDE is the Italian developer’s most recent crotch rocket game. Taking more of a sim approach, Milestone’s latest project finally arrives in North America after several delays. Unlike many other sim racers on the market RIDE is mostly accessible and a little more forgiving. Featuring over 100 bikes across four categories, it has a large selection of circuits and a decent amount of customization options. Considering this is an original IP, RIDE is an impressive first entry...
Ride offers players the chance to ride over 100 bikes, in four different categories (Superbikes, Supersports, Naked, and Historical Bikes) and take them hurtling at full speed over a huge variety of city, country and historic circuits from the world of motorcycling.
Milestone knows a thing or two about motorbikes. The industrious Italian developer has been pumping out licensed two-wheeled titles like MotoGP, MXGP, and SBK for years now, and RIDE represents its most recent return to the saddle. Unlike its older endeavours, however, this is an original intellectual property inspired by the likes of Gran Turismo and Tourist Trophy – but has it got enough gas in the tank to keep pace with such esteemed names?
When push comes to shove, RIDE doesn't get the job done. Some great ideas and what was obviously a clear decision to make a love letter to motorcycle fans is plagued by technical problems. What's especially galling is that the game suffered a last-minute delay on Xbox platforms, and still ended up with glaring technical issues. There's the essence of a good game in here - make no mistake about it - but it really is very, very hard to see it with all the problems in the way. We'd like to think that the development team at Milestone is working on patches for the game, but whether that's the case...
