The soundtrack is out-of-control good as well, Kenji Ito puts out another iconic soundtrack that fully takes advantage of the CD quality sound the PS1 brought to the series. You can find me listening to the entire soundtrack on the regular, but every single battle theme in this series is a bop and are the highlights of this varied soundtrack. Jazz, hard rock all the way to some good old country bumpkin sounding tunes are present here, and they are all done very well.

SaGa Frontier Remastered is a must-play for die-hard fans of the original. Though I found myself having some fun with the characters and gameplay, the game’s lack of explanation it gives to players about literally everything makes it hard to recommend to new players.

A strange, cool, sometimes frustrating, but still cool, unconventional classic RPG smartly remade for the modern-day.

SaGa Frontier Remastered is a good remaster of a classic JRPG. No one will argue that it does its job admirably, and adds in features which help the better aspects of the original game shine. However, there's only so much it can do to make up for elements of the original game which have aged terribly.

The release of SaGa Frontier Remastered is a pleasant surprise. Upon its original release in March 1998, many players in the US didn’t know what to make of it. Its Free Scenario System combined pseudo-open world gameplay with JRPG standards to make a title that was ahead of its time in many ways. In retrospect, SaGa Frontier brought more innovation than it was given credit for, and it’s great to get a chance to play it in this enhanced form.

I love classic JRPGs. There’s something about the mix of experimental storytelling, wild creativity, and mechanics that work but aren’t quite nailed down yet that really captures my imagination. SaGa Frontier Remastered captures this perfect storm almost perfectly. The original game is well known as a flawed – read, incomplete due to time constraints – masterpiece, and the remaster was created specifically to add in the many, many shiny things that were left on the cutting room floor. Did it work? Yes. Do I still have things to complain about? Also yes. But I suppose that’s to be expected when...

SaGa Frontier Remastered is a game for die hard fans of the original only. Veterans will appreciate the quality of life features along with the addition of Fuse, but everyone else will be put off by the sheer amount of grinding, barebones plot and characters, and tedious leveling system.

One of my first experiences with Akitoshi Kawazu's unique RPG design was that of SaGa Frontier on the original PlayStation. Despite offering seven unique viewpoints, I only played through as the masked superhero Red/Alkaiser and even then never succeeded with making my way all to the end. I've since given the title multiple attempts and even completed a couple of scenarios over time. You could imagine my surprise when Square-Enix suddenly announced that not only was a remaster of the original title in the works, but they would also be adding in content that once was left behind on the...
