Professional reviews from gaming critics

Silent Hill 2 isn't just superior to the original - it may just be the greatest survival horror ever made.

That Silent Hill 2-shaped hole in your heart? It’s gone now, with Bloober Team’s faithful and outright terrifying remake.

Bloober Team has crafted a Silent Hill 2 remake that respects the original while delivering a fresh, terrifying experience.

With excellent performances, improved mechanics, and more than just a fresh coat of paint, Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 is one of the studio’s best projects to date. A sinister and compelling return to Silent Hill that you won’t forget in a hurry.

Let's all be honest: Silent Hill 2 (the original) is one of, if not the best, horror game ever made. Indeed, it's arguably one of the best games ever made, point blank. With an outstanding story, compelling enough characters, and strong visuals (for the time), but most of all, a horror game that dripped in the atmosphere and sucked you in better than even the most adept of prostitutes.

“Silent Hill 2's remake is a faithful tribute to a horror classic that hardly holds anything back.”

Silent Hill 2 is a skilfully handled retelling of one of the medium's most loved survival horror games. It stays faithful to the original (to a fault at times) but breathes enough new life into it to simultaneously ensure that long-time fans will appreciate the respect shown, while newcomers won't find it antiquated.

Investigating a letter from his late wife, James returns to where they made so many memories - Silent Hill. What he finds is a ghost town, prowled by disturbing monsters and cloaked in deep fog. Confront the monsters, solve puzzles, and search for traces of your wife in this remake of Silent Hill 2

Bloober Team's remake hews closely to the original's high standards, but occasionally stumbles.

Silent Hill 2 both succeeds and falters because of its almost reverential recreation of the original. While that makes for a good horror game overall, it shies away from improvements or reinterpretations that could have smoothed over older ideas or enhanced dated mechanics.

In my restless dreams I see this game, Silent Hill 2. You promised that one day you would make a remake of it and let me feel what I felt years ago. But you never did, and now I'm here alone, waiting in our special place...

The story and character models are something I can live with. Unless someone is a purist, then the game will certainly make them lose interest very quickly. In my opinion, however, the biggest sins of Silent Hill 2 are the extensive exploration, which eventually becomes tiresome, and the untapped potential of combat.
