I've been gaming for some time now and there are certain games that leave their mark, either for great stories, great graphics or great sound. I remember with
Space Hulk: Tactics is one of the best turn-based games in the Warhammer 40K universe despite a few power balance issues.
Space Hulk: Tactics is the most impressive Warhammer 40K effort I’ve played in recent memory. Cyanide clearly decided to focus on the atmospherics and worldbuilding in lieu of the complex combat systems that make other 40K titles strategically engaging. Space Hulk doesn’t have that, but what it does offer is a visceral, best-played-in-first-person tactics board game that offers up a hefty challenge. Do Hero Quest next, Cyanide!
As a tactics game, the challenge and depth of Space Hulk Tactics is spot-on. The characters and levels look great. Each unit type has plenty of cool abilities to create vast possibilities for approaching a problem. Every map is laid out in such a way as to force both teams to constantly make interesting decisions. The Space Marine campaign has some really cool ideas that help it not feel like you’re just hitting “Next Mission” over and over. It’s just a bummer that the controls get in the way of me being able to truly dive in and enjoy it, like having to eat a really nice Thanksgiving pie with...
Anyone who’s familiar with Games Workshop and their tiny intricate character pieces and story-rich lore is no stranger to the various tabletop and video game spin-offs that pit enemy armies against each other towards a greater goal. As an avid fan and collector of Warhammer fantasy myself, I’d always been intrigued by the idea of getting into Warhammer 40K. It wasn’t until recently I had finally obtained the board game Space Hulk where I found myself wanting to delve deeper into the world of 40K without spending even more money investing in a whole new army altogether. With the release of Spac...
Nevertheless, taken in reasonable doses, like the board game it’s based on, Space Hulk: Tactics is a rewarding and satisfying strategy game, whether you’re purging the unclean or punching your extendable jaws through an intergalactic fascist’s face. Thanks to its board game roots it’s a more claustrophobic experience than other turn-based strategy games, but set foot aboard this Space Hulk and you’ll have nothing to lose but your spleen.
All the elements of a great game exist here, but they are hampered by poor design choices, and frustrating gameplay. With a little extra polish Space Hulk: Tactics could shine, but in its current state? It’s lost in space.
