Space Invaders: Invincible Collection Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Indeed, there aren’t many properties that have a longer and deeper history than Space Invaders. Taito’s legend started before Mario Bros., before Pac-Man, before Asteroids, before Castlevania, and almost any other “retro” video game series that you can think of. Building a collection out of that much history is actually much more difficult than working with minimal material, and Taito has done a really good job of curating a package of games that show all the transitions that Space Invaders has made over the years. The game’s currently only available in Japan, but… well, it’s Spa…
As a huge Space Invaders fan, you can imagine my delight when the Invincible Collection was announced and finally, here's my review.
At the end of 2020, we got a small collection of Space Invaders games called Space Invaders Forever. Despite not being a particularly bad collection of games, I still thought it was a bit of disappointment. Especially when you consider it didn’t feature any of the classic games from the franchise, such as the 1978 original or the iconic Space Invaders DX, instead opting for giving more modern (and lesser known) spinoffs a chance to shine. That felt weird, considering that Japan had gotten a...
Ultimately, whether you should buy Space Invaders Invincible Collection depends on how much of an ardent Space Invaders fan you are. If you really do have fond memories of the original and feel like you could play it for hours again, as well as discover some more associated titles, it’s probably well worth your hard-earned cash. Most, though, are probably better off opting for the cheaper Space Invaders Forever collection; it also includes Space Invaders Extreme, offering the same core gameplay wrapped up in a much more modern and enjoyable package.
Space Invaders: The Invincible Collection does a competent job in bringing in over four decades of alien shooting action to your Switch in a comfortable and accessible package. Solo players will relish the challenge of the online leaderboards, while fun multiplayer antics are provided by a couple of the available titles. The fact that there are no real emulation issues proves to be a relief, but there are also a few aspects that feel like missed opportunities: Space Invaders Extreme II is a no show and Arkanoid X Space Invaders is a straight-up mobile port with no Switch specific extras. While...
Sometimes nostalgia can make one willfully blind to foibles. Space Invaders Invincible Collection is one of those instances.
When Invincible Collection first loads up, it seems like there will be a lot of variety. Ten games come with the initial download with a bonus eleventh one (Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders) available as an add-on download. However, many of those ten games are only slight variations on the 1978 original. Including both the black-and-white and color editions of the original Space Invaders as separate games feels like filler even if they were technically separate releases. Space Invaders Part II and Space Invaders DX are also the same basic game with only minor gameplay tweaks, and the US and Japanes...
