Spider-Man: Web of Shadows Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Overall, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is a very good game that I recommend whole-heartedly to any Spider-Man fan. If you don't have an affinity for ol' webhead, the lack of mission variety and control issues are likely to significantly detract from the enjoyment you will have with this title. If you can get past that, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows offers a cinematic experience and a great combat system.
A deadly symbiote invasion brings total devastation to the streets of New York City in the next Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, where players have ultimate control over the city’s salvation and Spider-Man's destiny.
Spider-Man fans will likely still get a lot of fun from the game because of the decent treatment of the main man, but he really needed better material to work with in order to have a broader appeal.
The graphics in Web of Shadows looks almost like a PS2 game, with poorly detailed characters and incredibly blocky buildings that are impeccably straight. There is a distinct lack of diverse enemies and fighting the same things over and over again will get repetitive quickly, especially when coupled with the button mashing fighting system that the game employs. In the end, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is a missed opportunity. Activision, Treyarch, Aspyr and Shaba were given a blank slate to create whatever Spider-inspired tale they wanted, and they put together a game starring a whiney hero, a foggy story, repetitive gameplay, and a focus on pretty combat combos instead of engaging combat mechanics. Web of Shadows is better than the last Spidey game to make it to the market, but that's not a ringing endorsement. If this game makes your spider-sense tingle in a good way, I'd suggest renting or waiting for a price cut before taking the plunge.
Little else can be said about Web of Shadows except that unlike previous Spiderman titles, this one is intended for teenagers instead of younger kids, and it doesn’t help it along. Boss battles are not memorable and the few cameos other superheroes make are not particularly worthwhile. There is also a lack of unlockable secrets, which in the past had fans playing through the game over and over again to find each and every one of them. In the end, this incarnation of Spiderman is a mediocre ...
