Steep: Road to the Olympics Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Coming in at £24.99/$29.99 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, many will consider Steep: Road to the Olympics’ price to be a bit, well… steep. The truth is though, is that for those who jump into it feet first it’s easily worth the price. Being able to hurtle down yet more mountains with all the available disciplines equates to huge amounts of fun, and there’s nothing else quite like it available. This is an expansion in the traditional sense, and while its self-contained story is little more than a diversion, it’s got a lot more going for it.

Steep: Road to the Olympics is based on the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics taking place in PyeongChang, South Korea. Ubisoft has decided to narrow the focus of this Winter Olympics game to 12 events featuring Snowboarding and Skiing. While that means we won’t get any skating, bobsledding or curling (sorry, fellow Canadians), it still provides gamers with some fun events. In Road to the Olympics, you star as you – but not really you – as you’ll have to pick from a handful of premade characters (same people from Steep’s base game) and country you’ll represent. If you’ve been holding off on Steep, but long for the days SSX or Shaun White, then Steep has you covered. Plus, you can put on a wind suit and go base jumping. Beat that, SSX Tricky. Road to the Olympics came out on December 5th, and can be bought with the base game of Steep for $60, or just the expansion (though you need Steep) for $30. Recommended.

Steep: Road to the Olympics adds a ton of new content that will surely please fans of the base game. However, for those who weren't able to get on board with the game's free roaming aesthetic, there is little new that will change their minds. While the new Olympic story campaign offers some much-appreciated structure, it is over quickly, and players are left with an avalanche of content and no map directing them where to go next.

The Winter Olympics and Steep don't have a lot in common other than they take place on snowy mountains, which is the crux of this expansion's problems. Steep's base game and its DLC up to this point are open-ended experiences predicated on letting players explore different extreme sports forms in free spaces. The addition of nine Olympic events and a Become a Legend mode in Road to the Olympics restrict what is best about Steep with little to show for it in return. Even if you're solely interested in the Olympic content, this expansion provides little substance.
