Sucker for Love: First Date is one of many games inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s work. Like many of its fellows, it is a horror game that leans hard into the terror of the unknown. Unlike most of its fellows, it also explores a very specific response to that terror. Namely, the deep and chilling desire to smooch Cthulhu on the—beak, presumably. Octopi don’t have lips.
Sucker for Love: First Date takes horror, comedy, and a hint of romance and blends them together into a short memorable, if slightly flawed, visual novel with a few surprises in store.
If we take our eyes off what the P.E.N.I.S. is suggesting for a minute, Sucker for Love is a wholly enjoyable experience. The writing is hilarious and clever; especially a treat for anyone who has a Necronomicon on their shelf. Its approach to the genre is completely irreverent, and it pulls it off so well it’s flattering. It’s certainly not the longest visual novel you will find, but it’s worth forfeiting your sanity to summon. Just beware of the bugs that crawl beneath its skin.
I’m not a coward. I’ve smooched aliens, vampires, and after an unfortunate playthrough of Hatoful Boyfriend, I have also smooched birds. It only makes sense that dating sim fans are always looking for the next new thing, the next face on which to plant your metaphorical lips. Sucker for Love: First Date definitely comes with some out of this world characters who are ripe for a kissy, even if actually getting one is going to possibly be more pain than it is worth.
