Super Mario Bros. 35 Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Super Mario 35 is fun and a novel idea, but it falls short with its main battle mechanic feeling like an afterthought during play. The extra enemies on screen add some fun tension to this ultimate classic, up until the late game stagnates and stalemates.

As much as I love playing Super Mario 35, it's a downer that I can't jump into a lobby with friends. Sister battle royale showcase Tetris 99 initially did not have this feature, but eventually added it about a year after launch. And that leads to the biggest problem with Super Mario 35. It won't be around a year after launch. It's only here for six months. Why? Why does that have to be the case? Do Switches self-destruct if the game is on the eShop longer than six months? There's no reason for this to be a limited offering and it's sad to think that I won't be having this kind of fun six month...

It's the anniversary of a Mario classic and what better way to celebrate than with a frantic online multiplayer game? Let's jump to it.

Super Mario Bros. 35 is a flawed game in some ways while offering something new and unique and a whole lot of fun in others.

There’s plenty to criticize, but Super Mario Bros. 35 is a free download, so give it a shot. I’ve played many rounds already and will jump into plenty more until that fated March 2021 eShop removal death date. Hopefully Nintendo has a change of heart like it did with Jump Rope Challenge and updates the game to address some of its shortcomings: because it has even more potential than a temporary flight of fancy.

Super Mario Bros. doesn’t suit the battle royale formula as well as Tetris, but this is still a fun novelty that neatly demonstrates the ageless virtues of the original game.

Super Mario Bros. 35 is an extremely fun twist on the classic platformer and the battle royale formula with plenty to love, although it starts to lose its luster after just a few hours because repeating level 1-1 and a handful of other early levels becomes a chore. But before that happens, developing a winning strategy, perfecting each jump, and knowing just where and when to send your defeated enemies is a satisfying mental juggling act, and winning is a truly special feeling indeed.

Nintendo have been the purveyors of “this shouldn’t work, but it totally does”. Take Tetris 99 for instance. Tetris was very rarely a multiplayer game, and yet they found a way to make it a battle royale. In the same vein, Nintendo has now made Super Mario Bros. 35 during the timed thirty-fifth anniversary event for Mario. Once again, Mario is very rarely a game associated with PvP, and especially not battle royale, so how does it work?

It still remains fun on some level, because Super Mario Bros. is fun, and battle royale games are fun. But some poorly thought out decisions lead to this hobbled from reaching the potential that a Mario battle royale game might otherwise be able to achieve.
