What there is to know about Sword Art Online: Lost Song
Sword Art Online: Lost Song is an RPG based on the novel, manga and anime, Sword Art Online.
It’s dangerous to go alone into Sword Art Online: Lost Song. The single-player campaign is paper thin, combat and enemies are repetitive, and the fan service kept to a minimum. On the other hand, adding other players to the mix lets you find the fun in its smooth controls, coordinating attacks against hordes of enemies, and tough competitive duels.
Unfortunately, Lost Song stumbles hardest when trying to engage players outside that sphere of pre-existing investment, and in some ways ends up an even less suitable jumping-off point for newbies who want to get in on enjoying the franchise. My advice to those folks would be to watch the anime or try out Hollow Fragment first. If they’re still jonesing for some more of this motley crew of irredeemable MMO nerds when they’re done, then Lost Song will be music to their ears.
Lost Song‘s sound is decent enough. The voice acting is that of the original anime, meaning that each character speaks in Japanese with English subtitles. The voices are all very fitting, with each voice matching its character’s appearance very well. The music in the game is alright with the exception of a few songs, like the boss battle theme and Ryne’s track, standing out above most. Though the music for the areas fits for their themes, it rarely stands out or becomes memorable.
Sword Art Online: Lost Song is an interesting title, because its intuitive combat is an easy way for newcomers to experience the game. At the same time, it has a story and history that really is geared towards those who are already familiar with the series and the prior video game entry. Those two items are somewhat at odds with one another, but if you can get past that and the middling story, I found the actual characters and humour engaging.
