When it's your birthday you expect to have an awesome day. You get some cake, presents, hangout with a few friends or family members. It should be a swell time.
Regardless of the overall simplicity or the uncomplicated design, The Adventure Pals is a really charming platformer that is a joy to play whether by yourself or with a friend in co-op. It’s a lighthearted, jokey journey filled with a plethora of fun ideas that is eminently enjoyable, especially with a younger gamer.
While levels may feel stale later on and combat could be better, The Adventure Pals is still a solid platformer with tight controls and an incredibly imaginative and humorous world that is more than worth checking out for its price.
The ramped-up difficulty towards the end of the game may be off-putting for some, considering its very much kid-friendly exterior, but if you don’t mind a bit of a challenge, The Adventure Pals is very much a worthwhile romp. I struggled to put the game down once I’d started, playing most of its 10-or-so hour campaign over the course of one weekend. With on-point controls, gorgeous visuals and a great sense of humour to boot, this is a game that no platforming fan should pass up.
We tell you, it’s a good game! It’s not average! It might have some problems here and there, but you have to admit it is a “Good” game.
The Adventure Pals is pure joy for anyone of any age. The eccentric characters bring so much light into your life, along with their comical anecdotes and witty remarks. The gameplay is very laid-back, but hack'n'slashing funky foes makes you feel like a warrior nonetheless. An entertaining escapade follows Wilton, Sparkles the giraffe, and Mr. Rock, even if the challenges aren't, well, challenging.
Indie 2D platformers are a dime a dozen and it takes a lot for one to stand out. The Adventure Pals sure is a silly and fun-filled entry in the genre but is it worth playing? Put your pet rock in your pocket and let's see.
The Adventure Pals is a side-scrolling action-adventure platformer about friendship and exploration, featuring RPG elements and two-player local drop-in/drop-out co-op.
The Adventure Pals feels like a loving homage to Adventure Time and the work of Behemoth. And while its fun to play and look at, the surrealist comedy of it all feels a little forced and falls a little flat.
There are several issues marring The Adventure Pals that prevent it receiving my whole-hearted recommendation. Yet, despite these problems, I very much enjoyed my time in its zany embrace. Its quirky characters, breezy story and colourful game world proved to be enchanting, while its solid platforming and combat mechanics, in conjunction with local co-op play, kept me on my couch till the end of the story. If you have a pal to go adventuring with, then The Adventure Pals is well worth a look.
What do a giraffe with a helicopter tongue, a sentient rock, a shopkeeper whose head is a giant bee and a band of folk musician hippie foxes have in common? They’re all in this game.
Visually, Adventure Pals seems to take influence from Cartoon Network shows like Adventure Time, as well as various webcomics. It’s a simple but effective style that makes the world of Adventure Pals feel fun and goofy while allowing for absurd power-ups like a flying giraffe and sunshine bombs. While I found the environments to be pretty generic (forest area, beach area, graveyard, etc.), the character designs were okay, even if they look fairly similar.
The Adventure Pals is a delightfully insane adventure game filled with hot dogs, giraffes and pet rocks by Massive Monster and is out now across all platforms. This indie title was funded on Kickstarter back in 2016 and has captivated many of us here at Checkpoint. Showcased at 2017’s PAX AUS, we were all instantly addicted to this adorable and hilarious indie title and have been eagerly awaiting its release ever since. Of course nobody was more excited then yours truly so when the opportun...
