The Council: Episode 5 - Checkmate Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
While Checkmate doesn't hit the heights set by previous episodes, The Council overall is proof that the art of storytelling is still well and truly alive.
Checkmate wasn’t a bad episode. It was interesting enough and well-paced enough to keep my interest for its short running time. There were some very well-delivered scenes, and it finally threw itself headfirst into the occultist themes that The Council has so far only teased. But to only fully arrive there at such a late stage in the game makes it feel almost pointless. And as such, I couldn’t feel particularly satisfied when the credits rolled. The Council had a great deal of potential, but ultimately, the final package ended up being rather disappointing.
The council is finally adjourned. The long and winding tale of the young De Richet and the cast of historical oddities has finally come to an end. The rivalry and competition between Holm and Mortimer will finally be resolved. For players who haven’t completed episode four yet, be warned, there are spoilers ahead.
The Council's final episode fails to deliver a satisfying ending, nor a strong episode to a season that desperately needed it.
That’s it. The Council is over. I am now writing the last words about this godforsaken series ever. I think there are two parts of my life: pre- and post-Council. I am not the same man I was when I started playing these games. It’s time for me to move on. Sayonara, The Council.
