I love it when newer horror games really delve into the genre’s past, bringing modern improvements and taking the more hardcore design philosophy that really defined the genre. Games like Signalis, Crow Country or even the original Tormented Souls really brought their own twist to what was once a perceiving stale genre. Tormented Souls 2 is an excellent new entry in a budding horror franchise that takes everything that made its predecessor great and builds on top with an added layer of polish.
Tormented Souls 2, like its predecessor, offers some solid survival horror action inspired by classics of the genre. Some might find dealing with or avoiding enemies a bit frustrating at times though, and a number of its puzzles could be considered a little too obtuse for comfort.
Despite some nostalgic quirks that perhaps should have remained in the past, Tormented Souls 2 is an atmospheric callback to the iconic adventures that made contemporary horror gaming what it is.
Tormented Souls 2 is a fun, albeit thematically predictable, sequel to a game that served as a delightfully nostalgic surprise to longtime horror fans. It's abundantly clear that Dual Effect has put their heart into this ongoing love letter to classic survival horror, utilizing elements that few other horror indies have dared to touch in favor of modern playstyles and concepts.
