Townscaper

byOskar Stålberg2020

Townscaper is an experimental passion project. More of a toy than a game. Pick colors from the palette, plop down colored blocks of house on the irregular grid, and watch Townscaper's underlying algorithm automatically turn those blocks into cute little houses, arches, stairways, bridges and lush backyards, depending on their configuration.

Townscaper Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Townscaper is the perfect game if you’re looking for a way to relax and unwind while flexing your creative muscles. The mechanics may be limited, but the game itself is absolutely limitless. Townscaper is like a nice warm batch of cookies from grandma, and I can already tell I will be returning quite often to the comforts I found while playing.

Philosophical question: is it better for a game to do one thing really well, or several things with a moderate degree of success? Would you rather eat at a (pre-COVID-19) buffet, where the chicken is delicious but the potato salad tastes like old socks, or at a fancy restaurant where all they do is serve a square of concentrated perfection that melts in your mouth? Townscaper has a limited feature set, but you won’t find a more relaxing way to spend a few minutes.

Townscaper is less of a game, more of a tool to simply play around with. It has no goal either, but that is part of its almost hypnotic charm at being an enjoyable experience that allows us to simply play around as we see fit.
